The Richard K. Haffelder Foundation

Dedicated to the Memory of Richard K. Haffelder

(1959 to 2016)

This page and the associated Richard K Haffelder Foundation are dedicated to the memory of a great friend to so many, including the BunkerHead family. Sadly, Richard lost his hard-fought battle with cancer at the age of 57, just as he was beginning a new career with BunkerHead. Although he is no longer with us physically, Richard’s memory and spirit live on.

Richard loved God, family, friends, and everything sports and outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, loved football, basketball, baseball, and there was no bigger University of Texas Longhorn fan! While the thrill of the sport was definitely a draw, Richard would tell you that the thing he enjoyed most about all of these activities was that they brought family and friends together to share in good food, good drink, and great fellowship.

Richard was one of the most generous individuals a person could hope to meet. Those who knew him agree that the saying “he would give you the shirt of his own back” was invented just for Richard. Whether it was single-handedly hosting and catering huge UT Longhorn tailgate parties, supplying the entire deer camp with fancy three-course meals, or driving ice cream and pies out to remote campsites for everyone to enjoy, Richard was always serving others and putting smiles on faces.

Richard was taken from us far too early and there are so many people who never had the chance to experience Richard’s compassion and generosity first-hand. This is the driving force behind the Foundation. It is our mission to keep the spirit of Richard alive. To this end, all donations the Foundation receives, as well as a portion of BunkerHead’s proceeds, will go toward providing the funding necessary for children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a summer camp of their choosing. Depending on the child’s specific interests, the camp may be outdoors-related (e.g., hunting, fishing, camping), or it may be sports-related (e.g., UT Football camp). Through the Foundation, and on behalf of Richard, more smiles will be put on more faces, almost as if Richard never left us.

While the children selected for award of the Richard K. Haffelder Foundation funding each year will be needs-based, the selection will also take into consideration the individual child’s demonstrated character based on information provided in a brief application/award process. To the best of our abilities, the awards will be made preferentially to those children we deem to most-resemble Richard’s generous, compassionate, and caring personality.

Please note that, at this time, the Richard K. Haffelder Foundation is not an IRS-recognized charitable organization and, accordingly, donations cannot be taken as a tax deduction. Instead, the Foundation is simply a means by which people who knew and loved Richard, or those who may not have known him personally but understand and appreciate what he stood for, can come together to keep Richard’s serving spirit alive. We very much appreciate you taking time to read about our friend and donating to his memory.

God bless.
